What are they? Can Christians be affected by them? How do we guard against them?

Great question for this season and I humbly submit a quick answer for your consideration. Simply stated anything or anyone that seeks to replace empirical truth via any form of deception. (2 Corinthians 10:5)

Can a Christian be affected by them?
That would depend on what they BELIEVE to be true on any given matter friend.(Genesis 3:13; Judges 17:6)

World history is ripe with the bloody path of the self appointed religious doing Gods work on the earth via coercion and violence reference Foxe’s book of martyrs.
(1 Chronicles 21:1;1 Kings 22:22)

And others like good Christians would burn witches and then used slaves to gather their riches and even loaded Gods chosen people into box cars with little thought.
(2 Chronicles 18:22)

How do we guard against them?
Deuteronomy 29:29; Psalms 27:5;Psalms 62:10

Paul gives us valuable strategic insights in this matter

Ephesians 6:11-19

Philippians 3:8-9

Colossians 4:6

1 Timothy 4:1; 4:15

2 Timothy 3:13; 3:16

1 Thessalonians 5:20

In the lord’s freedom test ALL spirits…warrior on

In my opinion, lying spirits are beings in the spiritual realm that are allied with Satan (who, as Jesus said, was a liar from the beginning (John 8:44)), and who attempt to deceive humanity into rejecting God and the salvation that He offers in Christ.

On a "macro" level, they are present in all the influences in the world that attempt to convince people that there is no God, or that people are "good enough" to be acceptable to God on their own merits, or that a loving God would never condemn anyone to eternal separation from Him.

On a "micro", day-to-day level, they lie to us about the costs associated with choosing actions and making decisions that appear pleasurable or beneficial, but that God has clearly declared as wrong or sinful.

Although these spirits (like Satan) have power by God's permissive will in this present age, they are still subject to God's sovereignty, and can go no farther than God allows. God may even use such beings for His own purposes to judge people who have finally rejected Him, as He did (for example) in connection with King Ahab's decision to attack Ramoth (1 Kings 22), which led to Ahab's death.

We guard against them by being thoroughly grounded in God's word in order to be able to rebuke those lies (as Jesus did with Satan when He was tempted (Matthew 4:1-11); by being constantly vigilant for situations where we may be subject to making wrong decisions so that we can avoid them whenever possible; and by seeking the help of the Holy Spirit in discerning and confronting them when they occur.
