The Roman Catholic Church divides sin into two categories, mortal sin and venial sin. The issue of sin as the Bible teaches it is one of the most fundamental aspects of understanding life with God ...

No. There is only one unforgivable sin, Blaspheming the Holy Spirit. All the other sins are mortal in that if they are not covered by Christ's propitiation, they lead to hell. For example, say an attractive person walks by. One's reaction may be only in their own mind, which some would consider "venial". However, Christ teaches in the Beatitudes that lust is spiritual adultery. (Mortal). Venial sins are a myth, and a deadly one at that.

I have to challenge the Roman Catholic Catechism’s legalistic adherence to the Ten Commandments. They were never given to anyone but the Nation of Israel, the Jewish people. Christians are not, and have never been under the law. Christians are under grace. The bible makes it very clear that we have a choice to make. We can choose to live under the law, or under grace. We cannot live under both. There is no salvation in keeping the law. Our salvation is a gift from God through our faith in Christ Jesus (Eph. 2: 8-10).

YES. The Bible teaches about mortal and venial sins.

In 1 John 5:16-17, the author writes, "If you see your brother or sister committing what is not a mortal sin, you will ask, and God will give life to such a one - to those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin that is mortal; I do not say you should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not mortal."

There are only two sins that can send a person to hell. One can not be committed now.

Those who said Jesus did his miracles by the power of Satan sinned against the Holy Spirit and could not be saved.

That sin can no longer be committed. It could only be committed while Jesus was in His earthly ministry.

The only other sin is to never accept Jesus as the only way of salvation apart from works.

Matthew 7:21-23 Those that trust in their own works are not saved. Salvation can only be by Jesus’ one blood sacrifice for all sin apart from any works. Our works can not save sinners. Only Jesus’ finished work on the cross plus nothing.

John 6:40 and John 6:29.
