The OT was organized through the process of canonization, by which some books were included while others were excluded. Jews and Christians both agree that the OT as we know it today is the total canon of Scripture and the same Scripture available while Christ walked the earth. We also know that all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, correction and training (2 Tim 3:16) and that’s why the Song of Solomon was include in the Bible. The human body, in the context of sexual relations, is reflected in the Song of Solomon and that makes some uncomfortable, mostly due to the sexual taboos that exist today in the Christian culture. Even married couples often find it difficult to express in healthy ways their needs for intimacy. Similarly, children often are deprived of the opportunity to learn about sexuality in a Christian home setting, and sadly most of the learning is acquired from school or the Internet. God created Adam and Eve naked and they were not ashamed (Gen 2:25). They felt shame only after the fall, because shame and guilt is always the result of sin (Gen 3:8-11). I do not believe the book is allegorical or symbolic (as some have suggested), but a real song written by Solomon about his marital life which is recorded in 1 Kings 3:1. The Song of Solomon is about friendship and love and how two friends become married. Intimacy and romantic love is a gift from God, meant to keep a couple tied closely to each other in marriage (Mark 10:8). Sexuality is inescapable and a major preoccupation of our society. Many have sex on their minds constantly. As Christians we should approach sexuality in such way that would guard us against temptations while we remain free from shame and guilt. God gave humans dominion over the earth, and the married couples dominion over each others bodies (1 Cor 7:3-5). It’s up to us to learn restraint and show respect for something that is a gift from God. I believe the lesson from Solomon’s song is that an emotionally, physically and spiritually healthy person can and should enjoy God’s gift of sexually to the fullest within the frame of marriage.
In my opinion, you're asking the wrong question. At the moment the book was written it was part of inspired scripture. In fact, the first verse actually says it is the best poem ever written. The Song of Solomon is not a sensual book either. It talks about the betrothal, courtship, and wedding night of a bride and groom. Even more so, it provides one of the strongest words against premarital sex in all of scripture, repeating it several times throughout the book. To my knowledge, there has not been any dispute among the Jews regarding it's inspiration.
