The word “cult” has a several definitions so one would have to ask, "What exactly do you mean by the word?" Broadly speaking, I think any religion could be in some way classified by the word. The question I think would be better asked is whether the Catholic Church lines up with the Bible. I have my views on this, but rather than share them, I encourage others to take the primary tenets of the Catholic Church and then really search out the parallels and possible contradictions to Biblical scripture within the Catholic doctrine.
I believe it is a cult because Catholics follow anything the pope says to do; they follow him like Jim Jones' followers followed him. They repeat the same prayers over and over, which the bible says clearly that repetitions aren't what God wants to hear. Matthew 6:7 (KJV) "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking." I feel the same way about those who yell when they pray, do they think God is deaf?
Cassie, I believe your reasoning for the Catholic Church as a cult, citing that they will do whatever the Pope says, to do is faulty.
Many, many Catholics do not believe that priests should be unmarried. There are many Catholics who believe that it should be a woman's right to choose her destiny concerning children. Just ask Catholic Nancy Pelosi.
A great number of Catholics disagree with the enormous wealth of the church.
I don't believe it's accurate or fair to most Catholics to make a blanket statement concerning all Catholics and their beliefs.
