I would say that, even prior to the building of the Temple, God gave similar detailed instructions to Moses (in passages such as Exodus 25-27) for the Tabernacle (including the Ark in which the tablets containing the Ten Commandments were to be placed) that was used for worship by Israel following the exodus from Egypt until the building of the Temple.

In both cases, these instructions were meant to be a reflection (through the craftsmanship and care that would be required to conform to them) of the majesty of God (which deserved nothing less than the best efforts of those involved in carrying out God's directives), as well as to impress upon the people of Israel the honor and glory that was due to Him, and to produce in them a sense of awe that would induce them to keep His commandments..
