I would say that it would depend on the meaning attached to the term "the world". If one is referring to the people in the world, the attitude of the Christian toward them is to be one of love and compassion as individuals for whom Christ died, and who need to hear and receive the message of salvation that Christians have been sent to convey. This is the sense in which John 3:16 speaks of God loving the world. On the other hand, if the word "world" is used in the sense of the fallen temporal world system that has been corrupted by sin, and through which Satan works in enmity to God (even though it contains many features that are tempting or attractive to the carnal mind), Christians are to always reject it, and work in opposition to it. As the saying goes, as Christians, we cannot avoid being "in the world", but we must never be "of the world", as Jesus indicated in John 15:19, and John 17:14-16.
