Following Jesus has eternal benefits and can also have many potential temporal blessings. However, as Jesus Himself made clear, those who follow Him will also encounter a cost for their discipleship in the form of temptations, opposition, and even enmity from the unsaved (which may include even members of their own families), as well as from evil forces such as the devil, the fallen world system that he controls, and even their own sinful natures. Defying that opposition by remaining true to Jesus may result in the loss of human relationships, material possessions, and even the believer's own earthly life. In such cases, the Christian's allegiance to Jesus must take precedence, and he must be willing to give up all those things (including his own life, if necessary), rather than to be unfaithful to Christ. (As Jesus Himself said in Matthew 10:37-39, the person who loves anyone or anything in this world (including the person's own life) more than Him is not worthy of Him.)
I can speak to this important question from personal experience. I was warned for years by my Jewish mother that if I turned to Jesus, I’d be disowned. She followed through. And I have been rejected by my daughter and son in law and forbidden to see my precious grandkids since I shared Jesus with my grandaughter who experienced deliverance from certain fears because of Jesus. Major cost, but I have the confidence of Revelation 21:4, “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Eternal benefits versus temporal costs. And, I’ll have eternity with my precious grandaughter, and Lord willing, her brother, who was too young at the time and hopefully, her parents.
