What is the "unctiion from the Holy One" that all Christians have (1 John 2:20 KJV)?

20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

1 John 2:18 - 27

ESV - 18 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.

Other translations of this verse express the idea denoted by the word "unction" (which literally refers to the application of a substance such as a ceremonial or healing oil) in the King James Version by wordings such as:

an anointing from the Holy One (the most common wording)
the Holy One has given you His Spirit
Christ, the Holy One, has blessed you
you have had the Holy Spirit poured out on you by Christ

As indicated by the above wordings, the "unction" that all Christians have is God's gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit to those who place their faith in Christ for the forgiveness of their sins and for the granting to them of eternal life in God's presence.

This "unction" or "annointing" is both a Noun - the person of the Holy Spirit" and a Verb - the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit working in, for and through our lives.

Here is a translation of 1 John 2:20 from the Amplified Version:

"But you have an anointing from the Holy One [you have been set apart, specially gifted and prepared by the Holy Spirit], and all of you know [the truth because He teaches us, illuminates our minds, and guards us from error]."

The Holy Spirit was promised by Jesus to come and dwell within every believer [Christian]. He came on the day of Pentecost as referenced in Acts 2:1-21. The Holy Spirit is our resident teacher, whose wisdom opens our minds to understand the truth contained in the bible, and opens our hearts to receive that truth and apply it to our lives (John 14:26; 15:26). The Holy Spirit also provides the power to transform our character into the image of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18), and enables us to complete the good works that our Father in Heaven has prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10).
