I know that salvation is not by works, but this passage says to work for the food that endureth?
John 6:27
NASB - 27 "Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal."

Matthew 6:19: "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal." John 4:14: "..whoever drinks of the water that I shall give Him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give Him will become in him a fountain of water springing into everlasting life." The verse itself declares that Jesus has given all we need. John 4:10: "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." John 6:48: "I am the bread of life." Jesus declared. Deuteronomy 8:3: "So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your father's know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord." Read your Bible, pray, listen for the Lord's words. AMEN.
My opinion, after reading the full chapter in context, the multitudes of people that Jesus fed were trying to find him afterwards, but for the wrong reasons, to fill their bellies. Joh 6:26: Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate from the loaves and were satisfied.” Below the verses continue and we get a hint of what Jesus means by “working for food that gives eternal life.” Joh 6:27: “Work not for the food which perishes, but for the food which abides unto everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give to you; for upon Him God the Father has set His seal." Joh 6:28: Then they said to Him, "What should we do, that we may work the works of God?" Joh 6:29: Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent." To summarize in layman‘s terms, I believe Jesus is pretty much saying: You guys are following me because I fed you, but you’re not even listening to my message; you’re missing the whole point. Listen to my message, believe and you will have eternal life. The people continue to murmur against Jesus, saying to give them a sign, etc… But they just continue to not listen/believe, basically continue to miss out on the very “eternal” thing Jesus was trying to explain to them. Anyway, thanks for asking, great question!
