Since Israel had the ark, why did they lose (1 Samuel 4:5-10)?

In 1 Samuel 4:5-10, when the Israelites bring the Ark of the Covenant into battle against the Philistines, the Philistines become terrified, believing "a god has come into the camp," and fearing the power of the Israelite God; despite this fear, the Philistines fight and decisively defeat the Israelites, capturing the Ark of the Covenant, causing great panic and loss of life among the Israelites.

I would say that this was an example of God judging the state of human hearts, despite dependence on or observance of outward symbols or rituals.

God had given specific commands (as in Exodus 25) regarding how the sacred Ark was to be treated or transported. Even David (whom the Bible described as "a man after God's own heart") provoked God to punishing actions by violating those commands (1 Chronicles 13; 2 Samuel 6).

The transport of the Ark into the Israelite camp in 1 Samuel 4 similarly disregarded those commands. Thus, God withdrew His protection from the Israelites, allowing the Philistines to prevail in battle and even capture the Ark.
