If the question is referring to Joel 2:32, the term "remnant" refers (as it does elsewhere in Scripture) to a faithful group preserved by God amid judgment or calamity. This remnant is chosen by God, highlighting His sovereignty and grace. (In the specific context of Joel, the remnant represents those who remain faithful to God despite widespread apostasy.)

This idea is further developed in the New Testament in verses such as Romans 11:5 and Revelation 12:17, where the remnant includes all who believe in Christ, both Jew and Gentile. The calling by the LORD indicates divine election and purpose, assuring believers of their place in God's redemptive plan.

A very learned question, Lawrie! I have three remarks about the remnant.

1.	Israel’s Failure and the Faithful Few

At Mount Sinai, all of Israel accepted God’s covenant (Exodus 20:18-21), but many later disobeyed and perished in the wilderness (Numbers 14:29-30).

*	Even after entering the Promised Land, Israel's spiritual decline continued, yet a faithful remnant always remained.

2.	The Prophetic Role of the Remnant

**	Isaiah 10:20-23 – The remnant will return to God and depend on Him, not on human strength.

***	Isaiah 37:31 – A surviving remnant in Judah will take root and bear fruit.

****	Joel 2:32 – The remnant will be among those whom the Lord calls and saves.

3.	The Future Role of the Remnant

*****	The remnant is not just historical but also prophetic—pointing to a faithful group in the end times that will trust in the Lord while others fall away.

Warren Wiersbe has quite of bit more on "the remnant."

Genesis 32:24-29: "Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob's hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. And He said, 'Let Me go, for the day breaks.'

"But He said; 'I will not let you go unless you bless me!'

"So, He said to him, 'What is your name?' He said, 'Jacob.'

"And He said, 'Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.'

"Then Jacob asked, saying, 'Tell me Your name, I pray,'

"And He said, 'Why is it that you ask about My name?' And He blessed him there."

Jacob had been a questionable character. This spiritual event found him later reuniting with Esau.

Jacob acknowledged his dependence on the divine God, and requested favor. The "Man," mentioned at the beginning of this passage, reflects Jacob's initial perspective.

Each individual will have a 'wrestle' with the Man. This was and will be none other than Jesus. In Jacob's case, this was the pre-incarnate Christ. Does everyone see Him and accept Him by faith that is given by grace?

Romans 11:1: Look at Paul asking, "Has God cast away His people?"

Read Acts chapter 9. See Paul, who was Saul!

Romans 11:5: "Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace."

Isaiah 28:16,17: The Lord promises to establish His future kingdom on the sure foundation of justice and faith.

God will always have a remnant, those who believe and receive the gospel that they have heard. Then is placed deep within the heart by faith. These become the children of God.

John 1:17: "For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ "

Grace is offered to all people.

2 Kings 19:30,31: "And the remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

"For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant and those who escape from Mount Zion, the Zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this."

Isaiah 9:7: "Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end... judgement and justice from that time forward."

Isaiah 37:32: "For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and those who escape from Mount Zion. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this."

Isaiah 1:9: "Unless the Lord of hosts had left us a very small remnant, we would become like Sodom, we would have been made like Gomorrah."

Talk about a remnant, how about only 2 in Revelation chapter 11.
Bankruptcy! God forbid! However, look ahead to chapter 14 in Revelation. Amen.

God is always faithful. The word remnant basically means survivor.

Jeremiah 23:3: And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.

After the floods from the time of Noah and his sons to the time of Abraham, the Lord reveals unto us in Genesis, the “Angel of the Lord God who spoke to Abraham.” "By myself have I sworn," saith the Lord, "in blessing I will bless thee and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed. Thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed because thou have obeyed my voice." (Gen 22:15-18) The remnant of the Lord’s flock from all scattered nations, He will bring them back to their fold. The Angel of Lord God who appeared unto Jacob, the Lord said unto him, “Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal with thee: I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea which cannot be numbered.” (Gen 32:1,9-12)

Melchizedek king of Salem and the priest of the most high God encountered Abram when his brother's son Lot and his goods were taken captive. (Gen 14:12,18) As revealed in the scriptures, the priests were the shepherds right from the beginning of the creation. In the time of Moses to whom the Lord appeared and told him to bring out His people from the land of Egypt he brought them out and He said unto him, “Ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” (Exo 3:10/19:6) Being brought out of the land of Egypt they began to worship idols made of gold as into a calf. (Exo 32:24) The remnants who were scattered by the shepherds who ministered to their flock were idol worshipers.

A time shall come the Lord shall gather them from all countries to bring them again into their folds and to be fruitful. (Jer 23:1-2) The Lord, who appeared as an Angel right during the time of Abraham and Moses, is revealed to us in the scriptures. He is the end of the law for the righteousness of those who humble themselves and come to Him. (Rom 10:4) The sand of the sea that gets washed away is a land that is devastated. Only a remnant shall remain, but it too will face the judgment that will come as the Lord revealed to Isaiah. (Isa 6:13) The remnant of the Lord’s flock out of all countries whither they have been driven, the Lord shall bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful, and they shall increase.

Hosea 1:10: Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.
