The synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) each record multiple separate instances in which Jesus Himself told the apostles of the interval between his death and resurrection, as follows: Matthew 12:40 16:21, 17:23, 20:19 Mark 8:31, 9:31, 10:34 Luke 9:22, 18:33 This interval was significant because it was a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy from Hosea 6:2, and (as noted by Jesus Himself in Matthew 12:40) Jonah 1:17. In addition, it also allowed for observance of the Sabbath between Good Friday and Easter as a day of rest in accordance with the Law.
"The disciples had forgotten that Jesus promised to rise from the dead on the third day, but His enemies remembered. (Matthew 27)" --Warren Wiersbe Shame on us. This is crucial to the gospel. Without the resurrection on the third day, we have an incomplete gospel. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 New English Translation 3 "For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received—that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, 4 and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures." The gospel then is made up of 3 things: Jesus' death, burial & resurrection on the 3rd day. I am assuming that we all want to go to Heaven when we die. We must believe in the resurrection of Jesus on the 3rd day then. Is it any wonder that Third Day was a popular Christian rock band? And that they based their name on 1 Corinthians 15:4? However, they retired in 2018. But their music lives on.
This is a good question, and one I've asked myself over the years. Many people attach significance to the number 7 as "the number of completeness" in the Bible. 7 days of creation, the 7th day--the day of rest, 7 clean pairs of animals on the ark, but 3 has it's own unique place. On the 3rd day, the dry land appears. On mount Horeb/Sinai G-d instructed He would appear before the people so they should be ready against the 3rd day keeping themselves cleaning and "coming not at their wives". As for sacrifices, there are certain ones that state, today, tomorrow and let none of it remain until the 3rd day or else it becomes polluted and abominable. Leviticus 7:15-18 speaks of what's known as the "peace offering" in some translations. Leviticus 19:5-7 also reiterates this prohibition against eating any of that sacrifice on the third day. Shelamim שְׁלָמִ֖ים is the Hebrew, and to think it means "peace" places a strange idea in our heads that G-d must be appeased as some imagined the pagan 'gods' were to be worshipped. However Shalom is peace, but in it is the makes of shalem, or wholeness and completeness. We are indeed to be holy as G-d is holy, but all have sinned and fallen short and there is none that seeks G-d on his own, not one. If and since Yeshua is our wholeness and completeness and He Himself filled up the righteous standard of G-d that we could not hope to, then He alone is our Shalem and our Rock on which we can stand. He stated that the sign of Jonah would be such a sign for the "Son of Man" and that G-d would not suffer His soul to be corrupted. Since the third day in that instance of being left in the grave is representative of a shalemim sacrifice which has soured and become abominable, He had to rise before that. The third day just as the 8th day is the beginning of a new work if we contrast it with the 7th day. Yeshua stated that more and greater works will be left for us to do as a body, for He ascended to the Father. There is much significance to His being raised on the third day, and is for us to uncover and live out!
1 Corinthians 15:4: And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: The significance of the Lord Jesus being raised according to the Scriptures is profound. He revealed unto us that “No man hath ascended to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, who was and is from Heaven.” (John 3:13) Those who have fallen asleep after the second coming of the Lord Jesus in the clouds, the dead in Christ shall rise first. They shall be like angels who are in heaven. (1 Thes 4:15-16/Mark 12:25) The dead who hear His voice will be revived, much like Jonah, who was an atonement for his soul. He was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights, which the Lord had prepared for him. After two days, he was revived, and after the third day, he was cast out of the belly of the fish onto the dry land. (Jonah 1:17/Hosea 6:2/Lev 17:11) Lord Jesus was raised on the third day and walked among people, guiding them and leading them in wisdom to understand His death, burial, and His resurrection. After the Lord Jesus' burial, He descended to the dead, for the graves were opened and many bodies of the saints who slept arose. They came out of the graves after His resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared unto many. (Mat 27:52-53) For the hour came to pass as the Lord Jesus revealed unto us that the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. God the Father hath life in Himself and gave it unto His Son, to execute judgment for the hour came to pass for all that were in the grave that heard His voice came forth to the resurrection of life given unto them. (John 5:25-28) The scriptures reveal unto us that the Lord God is a merciful God, who relents and turns away from His fierce anger that we perish not. Jonah, knowing the Lord God is a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, having a great kindness, repented of his evil. Jonah went out again, knowing the Lord is with great kindness, and repented for the evil, and the Lord prepared him a shelter and covered him with shade. Jonah, going through what the Lord prepared, said, "It’s better for me to die than to live." The Lord then came to him and said that he had pity on the plant that had come up over him, which he had not laboured over. This significance to be raised is to reveal to us of his second coming for everyone to be in humbleness and to be prepared for the rapture. (Jonah 4) Leviticus 17:11: For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
