What is the best way to evangelize someone who is in a cult or false religion? This question has numerous answers depending upon circumstances. Are we dealing with family, friends or strangers? If it is family, or friends, my experience is to let them see the changes in your life that bespeak your new birth in Christ. It may be things like anger or negativity towards other people. Cults are usually works oriented and often have a very negative view towards people of the “world” which is generally everyone else but them. They often view God as being a strict disciplinarian and “salvation” depends upon working constantly to please Him and the leaders of the cult. This may even make them very critical of their associates whom they feel are not carrying their weight. Rivalries often develop that are a constant source of bad feelings. This is often reflected in the way they talk. When they see that you do not sincerely radiate that negativity, they can’t help but be impressed. For these close associates, it is more likely that they would be constantly seeking to evangelize you and not vise-versa. Nevertheless, I have found that the best way to evangelize these is to wait for them to ask questions either pertaining to your convictions or doctrines. If they are willing to ask questions, it is a sign that your good conduct is wining them over. As has been already mentioned, when defending the faith, it should be with restraint and humbleness. (1 Peter 3:15; 2 Timothy 2:23-26) On the other hand, if you happen to be approached by a stranger seeking to convert you, the best method I have found is to give your personal testimony. Tell them what freedom in Christ means to you. Cults usually do not have the freedom to express views that conflict with leader’s doctrine. If, however, you are familiar with their beliefs, ask meaningful questions that give you an opportunity to share your point of view relating to the questions. Again, do not appear to be trying to convert them. That is a turn-off and only drives them away, in my opinion. It is true that God and the Holy Spirit are the primary sources to draw them into Christ. However, that rarely happens if there is not someone there to teach. (Romans 10:13-15; Matthew 28:19-20)
