What did Christ mean when he said he did not pray for the world, only those the Father gave him?

John 17:9

ESV - 9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

The World is the ungodly. So He did not pray for those who choose to follow their god (satan) but those who are God's children His chosen ones.

John 17:9 "I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine."

The above verse harmonizes with Matthew 11:27 "All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

It also agrees with and supports several passages in John 6

John 6:36-37 "But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out."

John 6:39 "And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day."

John 6:44 "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day."

John 6:65 "And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father."

John 10:25-26 " Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you."

In Christ's prayer of intercession contained in John 17 He prayed:

v. 2 " As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. "

v. 6 "I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word."

v. 11 "And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are."

v. 12 " While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled."

v. 20 "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;"

v. 24 "Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world."

In 1 Corinthians 1:31 the apostle Paul referenced Jeremiah 9:24
"But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD."
