I never believe we "should" learn anything. We should learn what we do from reading and living our lives and we would all benefit from listening to the opinions of others. So the live of John as reported in the bible may say something to each individual reader. If they want more they can ask others if they want less then why did they bother to read it? I only ever want to learn anything that will one help me to live a happier life and two may help me to help others do the same. I have no need to read about John the apostle? I never ask a question to which I would accept the answer given without question. All questions have a minimum of two answers they are yes and no if one of those is not available or acceptable then why ask the question?
We can learn from John's life because he was a servant of the Lord and he always followed the Lord no matter what. He was caring for the Lord and he would do anything for Him. John was a great christian and we should all try to be like him and more like God in our christian lives. Like in the verse John 3:16: "For God so loved the earth and gave his only begotten son..." God gave his only son to die on the cross. We should be willing to give everything we have to serve him like John did. John the apostle is a great influence for all of us to follow.
Remember that God loves you always.
