David cut off a piece of Saul's garment while Saul was using the bathroom in a cave. When Saul stepped out of the cave and stood before his men, David also stepped out and lifted up the piece of Saul's garment. "And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept" (I Samuel 24:16). --Overcoming Shame - Whole Person Counseling

This one instance might have been "King Saul's Most Embarrassing Moment." He was crazy-jealous of David. " Saul had slain his thousands but David his tens of thousands," the Jewish women chanted. (1 Samuel 18:7-8)

Saul didn't like being number two. So he with his 3,000 chased after David and cornered him at the En-gedi oasis beside the Dead Sea. But David eludes them by hiding in one of the caves....

David's men want to kill him while he's doing his not-so-regal business. SMM

Instead, David with his God-given self-control only cuts off part of Saul's robe. He could have cut off Saul's head. Later, Saul was extremely embarrassed!
