How can I give up something to God when it becomes an addiction, such as playing video games?

I have been into online games since I was a teenager. I am now 27 years old and I have my own family now. Ever since I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior (not so long ago) I feel that God wants to give up this addiction of mine in online games such as "League of Legends". I just do not know how to start. I do not know what is keeping me from obeying his command.

1 Corinthians 10:23

ESV - 23 All things are lawful," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up.

The last part of the question needs to be addressed first.

Whether it is an addiction to video games or some other behavior, what keeps us from obeying GOD?

The best place to start is at the beginning.

2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us that "if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

Though being born-again means being reborn all new, the old nature remains part of our flesh & therein lies a great battle between the "new man" & the "old" and will congtinue until we escape the bonds of earth.

Colossians 3:8-10 tells us that "now" - "you yourselves are to put off all these things: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have 'put off the old man with his deeds, & have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him."

But in the meantime, it is up to us, to understand that the things that try to hinder us, control us, as it says in Hebrews 12, "the sin which so easily ensnares us" are the things that we can "lay aside" or "put off" as it says in Col. 3:8.

And understanding how we can do that is simply said, by His Holy Spirit.

When we are born-again, His Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us.
1 Corinthians 3:16, "do you not know that you are the temple of GOD & that the Spirit of GOD dwells in you?"
In 2 Peter 1:2-3 we are told, "Grace & peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of GOD & of Jesus our LORD, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life & godliness, through the knowledge of Him Who called us by glory & virtue,"

What else do we need that we don't have? Nothing!
How do we get the "all things" that we need? Through the knowledge of Him! And where is that knowledge found? In His Word!

While we were once helpless, standing alone & dead in our sin, now we are "made alive" by His Spirit....the KJV uses the word "quickened" & I love the sound of that....don't you?

That by His Spirit we were quickened, made alive, strengthened, enabled & empowered not by our own strength, but by His, the same power that created the universe, the same power that raised Christ Jesus from the dead dwells in us.

If you truly want to give up video games, then do it. They have no power over you, except that you allow them to have it.
Fill the time that you spent playing a useless & costly game with something that will not only benefit you but your entire family.
Be the husband & father that GOD intends for you to be. Set an example for your children that you will never regret!

Begin a serious Bible study, include your wife & children as you work through the Bible. Get to know the One Who gave His life for you.
You are to be the spiritual leader of the family. Be that man.

You don't need to be a language scholar to understand the Bible. You have His Spirit, "the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, & bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you." John 14:26

And remember what is written in 2 Timothy 2:15, "be diligent to present yourself approved to GOD, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

Do that knowing that one day you will stand before the Judgement Seat of Christ (2 Cor. 5:10) "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad."

Not to receive condemnation, for there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus - Romans 8:1, but if all we have ever done in our mortal life was satisfy the lusts of the flesh, then we will be bowing with empty hands & there will be no crown for us to receive.

At 27, you are young enough to have an impact on your family.
Begin today!
