What are the "rod" and "staff" in the 23rd Psalm 23, and why are they comforting?

Psalms 23:4

KJV - 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Not sure exactly why having the rod and the staff would bring me comfort, unless its meant that these two things would help to protect me while I was being a Shepard.so now that I am dying and traveling the valley of death.these will now bring me comfort and I will feel safe.

I think they were always there, but in here is more of a reassurance that even through the valley of death, there still are more difficult things to come, and he wants us to remember that He still doing what he promised to us, even throughout the valley of death.

The rod is God’s word (The Bible) and the staff is God’s spirt.
