I'm so glad I don't have to keep assuring myself that the scriptures were given to us by God.
The idea of the evolution of man doesn't bother me; I don't have to suspend my common sense to believe the scriptures to be the Word of God.
I have no need to imagine Adam and Eve without navels in order to refute unbelievers who might argue that if they had bellybuttons that would be proof that they descended from people who lived prior to them, thereby calling into question the idea that they were the first 2 people to live on the earth. Them having navels don't disqualify the story in Genesis, for me. If it gives an unbeliever a talking point, it's to his or her disfavor.
The Genesis account of creation can't be seriously understood to be literal in meaning. It was written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; it has to be read and understood with the help and inspiration of the same Spirit.
I know what it's like to read the Bible as an unbeliever. I believed there was a God who put us here. But the Bible didn't make sense, so I discounted it and most of what it says.
I WAS BLIND, and wrong about the scriptures. God opened my eyes! Praise the Lord!
Now with eyes and ears that are holy (set apart by God), I can read that the earth was without form and void and get meaning from it. Day one, two and three with no sun for the earth to revolve around doesn't bother me. But I do know it ain't talking about A NORMAL DAY!!
Navel or no navel, they are our first ancestors.
