Genesis 2:23-24 "And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."

I believe the lesson here is to "leave" and "cleave".
In the context, leave means to leave behind, depart, let go. To cleave is to stick, stay close, join together, etc. In so doing two separate individuals have become one unit. The union is spoken of as a melding together of heart, mind and soul, a bond and cohesiveness that becomes inseparable. Although comprised of two distinct personages, the two operate as one in intent, goal and purpose.

The apostle Paul said it best in Ephesians 5
v. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Sex.

I'm sorry but I can't think of any other interpretation for this passage.

The two become one, literally. And the one they become, they have to give a name nine months later.

Am I saying they give the same name to every child that they have? Yes. Children should bear the father's name.
