As is the case with multiple psalms, the actual wording of Psalm 31 is prefaced with a notation. In the case of Psalm 31, this notation read, "To the chief musician. A psalm of David". By my understanding, this notation was present when the psalm was first composed (that is, it was written by David, identifying himself as the author), rather than having been added by a later commentator.
