Should we sometimes tithe for the feeding of the poor as the Jews did?

Deuteronomy 14:28 - 29

ESV - 28 At the end of every three years you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in the same year and lay it up within your towns. 29 And the Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance with you, and the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, who are within your towns, shall come and eat and be filled, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands that you do.

2 Cor. 9.7 "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

Under the New Covenant, we are not commanded to tithe. We are told to give cheerfully as we decide in our hearts to give. Tithing just places you under the Law and if you are a believer, then you are not supposed to be under the Law's subjection anymore. We are free from the Law of Moses.

That being said, being under the Law of Grace, we should be treating those around us as Jesus commanded us to:

Matthew 25.33-46: "And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.'

Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.'

Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.'

Then they also will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?' Then He will answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.' And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

We are commanded to give to those around us. If they are hungry, give them food. If they are need clothes, give them clothes. If they need to be ministered to, give them love. If we do this to the least of them, we do it to Jesus.

This takes care of any burden to tithe. Tithing is a distinct amount that the OT people were compelled to do whether they wanted to or not. If you follow the NT teachings, then you will be open and submissive to give away everything if asked to. Your possessions belong to God. Your life, your family, your stuff all belongs to God because He bought you lock, stock and barrel.

If you have this settled in your heart, then tithing is a poor excuse for giving, because it handcuffs you.

This passage was a regulation or code of conduct of social system given by God to his people (Israel) in the Old Covenant.

In the New Covenant, Jesus was strictly commanding all whoever believes in Him to care for his needy people (Mathew 22:39; Matt 25:31-46), but Jesus did use the word "to give" instead of "tithe" (Luke 6:38), since the believers and followers of Jesus are people from all nations of the world. (Mathew 28:19-20) who have a different kind of cultures and social values.
