I read a Max Lucado Christmas devotional were this miracle is mentioned. It is a miracle recorded only in the gospel of John and it is Jesus first miracle.

The author of the devotional sees this as an event that explains the importance of friendship and how special we are to Him, His elect. Jesus was with His mother's relatives and friends at the feast and in those days to run out of wine at a wedding was a cause of major disgrace for the host.

Jesus said that His time had not yet come, so He had an appointed time and a plan to follow, but for the sake of His friends and relatives He performed the miracle before schedule.

After reading this devotional I personally thought of a deeper meaning as well.

All things happen at God's appointed time but if we fervently pray God may cause our petitions to happen before schedule.

When we ask in the Lord's prayer "Your Kingdom come" and when God's saints keep asking "How long before You will avenge our blood"; God may have mercy, remember us and grant us our petitions; accomplishing His will before the scheduled time.

God is all knowing, He knows we will pray, but still the prayers must be prayed in spirit and truth from our honest contrite hearts.

The wedding at Cana was prophetic, as was all of the miracles and parables of Jesus Christ while walking the earth as the Son of man and Son of God.

Revelation 19:10
And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

If it was prophetic, what is the significance for us today?

The key words are:
Wine, representing the revelation knowledge of the word of God. It is lacking, especially now, in our generation. What you hear from most pulpits are stories and stuff to make you laugh. The true word from the mouth of God that makes the hearers pricked in their hearts and truly repent as in the early church, and in the spiritual awakening that we read about following Azuza street, is lacking so much!
What to do? Jesus said to pour water into the water pots of stone. We're those vessels.

1 Peter 2:5
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6-7
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

We have to fill our vessels with the water of the word...

Ephesians 5:26
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
2 Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

When we have obeyed that command, as we 'scoop out' to serve people, the Lord will do a work of making the water become new wine...the kind that people had not tasted before.

Even though Jesus said to his mother that his time had not come yet, He responded to the need for wine since not having enough would have been an embarrassment to many involved in the wedding feast.

It also proves that God can change his mind for those he loves and for those that love him, and that nothing is impossible for him to do if he decides to do it, Luke 1:37.

His mercy endures for ever and his lovingkindness is greater than life, Psalm 63:3.

The story of King Hezekiah is another example of God changing his mind, giving him 15 more years of life when requested in prayer.

It is at this moment that Jesus first allows the people around him to see what he really is: the Messiah, long-awaited and now here at last. The water is the past. He is the wine, the promised future.

John 2:1-11 1 On the third day there was a marriage at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2 Jesus also was invited to the marriage, with his disciples. 3 When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." 4 And Jesus said to her, "O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." 6 Now six stone jars were standing there, for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the steward of the feast." So they took it. 9 When the steward of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first; and when men have drunk freely, then the poor wine; but you have kept the good wine until now." 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

We are under the Grace Age and a change is required internally. Jesus came for a thorough change internally. Jesus did not ask the servants to fill water in wine jars instead, in water jars.

Water jars/earthen jars/rock jars represents Jesus. Red Wine comes out of earthen jars. This represents Shedding of blood from the body by Jesus. If you are spiritually blind, you won’t’ be able to understand anything. A carnal man understands this miracle in his own imagination. Jesus supplied the best wine. In a lighter vein, He started a beverage corporation. He is the MD of the corporation. If the spirit of the Lord is not with you, you will understand that way. Jesus turned water into wine. It was a prophetic sign. I am the rock, the blood shall flow to cleanse us the sin of the whole world. It was a big truth that the first miracle had to change the world. 2000 years ago, the blood was flown, even now it is flowing. Jesus said, I have come to give my blood to affirm in the last day in Last supper.

Water represents symbolically the Word of God. Wine represents the Holy Spirit. Here is water in wine which means Holy Spirit is in the Word of God. In John 6:63 Jesus said. It is spirit who gives life: the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit and they are life.

At the wedding at Cana, the wine was served after the food. It is a Jewish practice. Wine was served after the full meal. In 1Cor.11:25, the Bible says, He also took the cup after supper saying `This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Why they had wine after a full meal? When you are full there comes the joy, a wine experience. They had the full meal at the wedding at Cana but there was shortage of wine. This means that everything is full but no joy. Joy comes from the Lord. In Psalm 16:11 last word. In your presence is fullness of joy. At your right hand are pleasures forevermore. There is joy in the presence of the Lord. Real satisfaction of joy in fullness comes from the Lord. Jesus brings joy to our family life.

When we live in this world, as families, we are always interacting with people. In many families there is no wine. In many marriages there is no wine experience. If you lose your wine experience, the Lord can restore it. Jesus will turn your life into wine experience. Jesus is the restorer of your life. Jesus told the servants to fill the jars. He said, "Rest, I will do. He said, `I will do the difficult part’. Do what you can. Jesus will do what he cannot do." Wine represents joy in Holy Spirit. Act2:12 says, Others mocking said. `They are full of wine’.

On the day of Pentecost, 120 people gathered in a small room and something special happened. They all started speaking in different languages. The public criticized. They drank the wine of Holy Spirit. It was not an ordinary wine. It is a wine imported from heaven. Foreign liquor came from heaven. The wedding house prophecy gives you supernatural wine. We receive new wine jars and heavenly wine from the Holy Spirit. Let us glorify our Lord and Saviour!
