I will surmise that your question comes from the ideas of Darrel Ray as expressed in his book "The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives And Culture".

I don't know if you are familiar with the text. But even though "God" is in the title, the precepts discussed involve religion only. The two are not the same. It discusses how religion has been the excuse for unsavory thoughts and actions that one group may perpetrate against another or how religion exercises control over people. The author, I suspect intended the book to be anti God and show how belief in God has harmed humanity. If the author were to be accurate, "God" should be dropped from the title, but I suspect he may not have a sound understanding of the difference.

In reality, a case can be made that the true God agrees with him, to a point. Not that belief in God is harmful, but belief in religion can be. God never intends to establish a religion. The bible is clear that God's intention was to establish a relationship with mankind. And thru that relationship our salvation, our ability to exist in Gods presence forever.

Mankind has taken our interaction with God and made it a religion. "Religion" is a man made product and therefor flawed. Jesus himself even criticized the religious leaders of his day, those that may have been seen as most respected by man. The Bible points out how wrong they were and the problems they had created.

God is not a virus. He is the creator of all. He wishes to know you and have a relationship with you. Our knowledge of him comes from a collection of writings we have in translation that we call the Bible. He offers you salvation thru his son, Jesus Christ.
