Although no detail is provided in either Genesis 10 or 1 Chronicles 1 as to the descendants of Put (whose name meant "a bow" (that is, a weapon of war)), Jeremiah 46:10 mentions the men of Put (that is, his descendants) as being warriors who were allied with Egypt, but who were defeated by Nebuchadnezzar as a judgment from God.

They were also recorded in Ezekiel 27:10 as fighting on behalf of Tyre, so they were apparently mercenaries.

Put was noted by the Jewish historian Josephus (in his work Antiquities of the Jews) as being the founder of Libya. However, Nahum 3:7-9 lists Put separately from the Libyans.

Chapter 7, verse 12 of the apocryphal Book of Jasher lists the names of Put's sons as Ariphi, Kesed, and Taari.
