As I understand this passage, Paul is speaking of Christ's love for Christians. He is saying that, whatever hardships we as Christians may experience in this life (and, specifically or especially, if those hardships arise as a consequence of our faith in Christ, such as through persecution), none of them (no matter how difficult they may be to endure, including even our own temporal death) can separate us from Christ's love for us.

In fact, as Paul had just said in verse 28 of the same chapter, God in His love can and will make even the greatest such hardships work together for the good of those who love Him. (That is the manner in which Christians' love for God and Christ are involved in this section of.the chapter.)

God loved those who would place their faith in Christ so much (even though they were sinners) that He sent His own sinless Son to live, die, and rise again on their behalf so that they could have eternal life with Him.

Paul is saying that, after God has gone to such extreme lengths to demonstrate His love for Christians, it would be inconceivable that He would then abandon them, condemn them, or allow any earthly circumstance (however difficult, and regardless of the fact that it may have even been foretold in Scripture, as Paul indicated in Romans 8:36 by quoting Psalm 44:22) or anything in either the physical or spiritual universe, to come between the redeemed and His love for them in Christ.
