What does it mean that the rich should do good works to 'store up treasure for the coming age?'

In my opinion, Paul is expressing the same thought here as Jesus did in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6:19-21). He is not teaching or advocating salvation by works; nor suggesting that the use of money (apart from faith) can save us, or provide the same "foundation" for salvation or eternal life as Christ's finished work (as Paul himself noted in 1 Corinthians 3:11-15), but that the dedication of wealth by a Christian in service to God or generosity toward those in need, done in gratitude to God for the salvation that He has already granted through faith in Christ, and in trust that He will provide for the individual's own material needs in this life, will be rewarded by God in eternity.
