I humbly submit for your consideration that the Lord was directing them to physically leave behind and not take the normal world items, that one would have with him as he set out as a traveling sojourner.

(Luke 10:3)
They were to travel as lambs carrying and worrying for nothing, trusting that all their needs would be met as they arose while traveling. (Luke 7:50)
This was a faith building exercise as the Lord had provided for them when they were physically with Him; now could or would He do the same when they were far off?
(Luke 10:17)

Bottom Line:
This is the Question each follower of Christ must answer for himself; Do I believe and know for a fact; Christ is who He said He is and will do exactly what He said.
(Luke 18:8)

In this passage, Jesus was sending out seventy of His followers in thirty-five groups of two to travel ahead of Him to the various towns that He Himself was later planning to visit, in order to tell them of the coming of the Kingdom of God (as Jesus Himself had preached at the beginning of His ministry (Mark 1:14-15)), and to prepare those towns for Jesus' upcoming arrival.

He instructed those followers (as noted in the verse cited in the question) to make no physical or material provision for themselves, by taking no money bag, other baggage, or even sandals with them. This was a demonstration of faith in the power of God to provide all that they would require, including through means such as the generosity of people who would believe and act on their message. (There may also have been practical security considerations involved here, since visibly carrying such items might have made them a target for robbers.) (Jesus told these followers that He was sending them out as "lambs in the midst of wolves" (Luke 10:3).)

"Traveling light" was also a means of not allowing the followers themselves to be diverted from their primary mission of spiritual evangelism by thinking about material things, or by unrelated distractions (which was why, in my opinion, the followers were also instructed not to get involved in discussion with anyone whom they would meet along the road, prior to arriving at their intended destinations).
