What a powerful question! However, in order to fully grasp the meaning of what was said, let's take the verse back to the original language using Strong's Concordance and see what treasures we can find! 

Deuteronomy 5:11 KJVS
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Take> advance, armour, lift up, magnify, burn, (this is a small list)
Name> purpose, reward, determined, position, honor, authority, nature (this is a small list)
Vain> devastation, waste, ruin, ravage, destroy, idolatry and vanity 
Guiltless> acquitted, blameless, forgiven, innocent, unpunished (this is a small list) 

In looking at these meanings, it becomes clear that the LORD was telling His people they were not going to take His great Name, the mighty wonderful things He had done for them and the way He had been with them night and day... and say of the Lord God that it was rubbish, it was not enough. His grace and mercy daily extended to them was not sufficient for their needs. God was going to lay this sin on their heads. 

This is a warning to us today, for Paul said in Corinthians, the Israelites were for our examples! 1 Cor. 10:11 

Many times we do not consider all the things God has done in our lives. We still feel if God was God... this would be better for us, or that would be better. Our old nature inside of us still wants to pretend we know what is "best" for our lives, like we can even control our next breath? 

Something to consider as we ask forgiveness for taking the Lord God's Name in vain.

We as Saints of God, should not misuse the name of the Lord by saying it in an empty or worthless way.

The third commandment says, "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God" EX 20:7) - the New King James Version says, "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain." This means that we should not use God's name lightly, in casual conversation, such as to express frustration or anger. Using God’s name in cursing, perjury, or unnecessary oaths is an insult to God. His name is holy and should be used with utmost respect and reverence.
