In my opinion, the word of the LORD was not delivered to Jonah through any human intermediary, but as a direct command from God. The Bible does not specify whether that word was in the form of an audible voice (as with Moses, for example), a vision or dream, inspired thoughts, or some other means, but it was apparently clear and unmistakable. Some other prophetic books in the Old Testament likewise indicate that "the word of the LORD came" to the prophet, without giving additional detail.
