What does the Bible say about women wearing a head covering, and does it apply to us today?

1 Corinthians 11:3

ESV - 3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.

In my opinion, Paul was referring to a head covering for a woman during worship both as a symbol of submission in a religious context (to both God and -- in the case of a married woman -- to her husband), and as a symbol of modesty (which is how I interpret Paul's comment "because of the angels" -- referring (in my opinion) to the account in Genesis 6:2 with regard to the sons of God (spiritual beings) looking upon the daughters of men, seeing that they were fair, and having children with them (since a woman's hair is a prime element of her physical beauty)).

The way in which I would apply this to modern Christian worship would be that women (and, particularly, married women) should not attire, adorn, or comport themselves with regard to worship services in a manner that is intended to be deliberately provocative or distracting (unlike social settings where they might be making an intentional or maximum effort to be visually appealing to their husbands or to members of the opposite sex in general).

I think Paul was talking to the people of Corinth about head coverings as they were part of their everyday custom. Paul also states that the prayers of an uncovered woman will not be heard. No one believes that! I feel therefore it does not relate to today's women.

My opinion is that Paul was speaking about the customs of that time, but as it pertains to Christians now, I believe that what Paul is saying is that when you come to the altar or when you go to your secret place to pray, put on the Head garment, which is Christ. Put on the garments of Christ, such as: humility, faith, love, compassion, etc. When we come before God, take Christ with us.

Do not pray in a way that will distract others from praying or hearing from God. Do not pray in a way that will take the attention off the Creator and put it on the creation. We should come humbly before the LORD. No one should be focused on your attire, your hairstyle, or even your facial expressions. Our head covering should be Christ, because He is the Head of the Church. Adorn yourself with the covering of Christ. Adorn yourself or cover yourself with Christ. He is our SPIRITUAL HEAD COVERING. So when we put on our head covering and come before the Father- that means we are coming with a spirit of humility, love, and fear of the LORD God our Father.

We are coming before God and bringing Christ with us because the Word of God says: Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." Jesus intercedes on our behalf to the Father, so when we go before God in prayer, we need Christ with us. Before we meet God in heaven, we need Christ with us 1st. I pray that my understanding was understood. God bless.
