According to the bible, God created all human beings for the singular purpose of worship and intimate fellowship. As we worship God for who his (nature and character) and what he had done (giving thanks) God is pleased to dwell with us intimately and we experience his presence that transforms our entire being to reflect his likeness.

The quoted verse provides 2 conditions for God to accept our worship - spirit and truth.

God has revealed his truth in the bible, His written Word to human beings. Everything we need to know about God, his nature and character, his plan and purpose, are recorded in this book.

But every human being is separated from God, because of our sin, until we receive his salvation. Once we hear and understand the good news of what Jesus has done to save us from the consequences for our sins, the moment we put our faith in Jesus we are saved. We are born again, become a child of God and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Now we are able to truly worship God in Spirit and truth. Jesus saved us, gave us a brand new life, and is coming again to bring us into the perfect new earth where we will live with God forever. That truth and promises are worthy of our worship.
