Why are Christians living in the Tribulation instructed to "be always on the watch"? (Luke 21:36)

Luke 21:34 - 38

ESV - 34 But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth.

I would say that the admonition to always be on the watch was being given in two senses -- first, for each individual to assure that he or she is continually in a spiritual condition that is prepared for eternity (that is, not consumed with temporal matters and concerns to the exclusion of spiritual preparation); and then also to anticipate whatever external temporal hardships may arise in order to be prepared to deal with them to the maximum extent possible, in order to make oneself of the greatest and longest possible service to God and others during those days.
