The word translated as "fountain" in the cited verse refers to an initial source or spring from which water flows -- in other words, the origin of that water. In that same way, God is the origin and source of all life, as both its Creator and sustainer -- and not just physically and temporally, but (in the case of humans) spiritually and eternally. Jesus expressed the same thought when speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well, when He referred to Himself as the source of living water (John 4:4-42).
Ps 36:9 the fountain of life is a symbol of renewal and vitality, this is a common term in Proverbs (Prov 13:14; 14:27; 16:22). --Faithlife Study Bible "For with You is the fountain of life"—is a metaphor [a specific kind of symbol] that speaks to the abundant, sustaining, and eternal nature of God's life-giving presence. A fountain is a continuous source of water, essential for life. This imagery reflects how God is the ultimate source of both physical and spiritual life. Just as water sustains the body, God sustains the soul. Genesis 2:7 tells us that God breathed life into humanity, reinforcing this idea. Water symbolizes cleansing, refreshment, and vitality. In the same way, God provides spiritual renewal to His people. John 4:14—Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that He offers "living water" that leads to eternal life, directly connecting this idea to Himself. The phrase “fountain of life” suggests more than just earthly provision; it points to eternal life. Revelation 21:6 and Revelation 22:1 describe God as the source of the "water of life," which flows from His throne. [Psa 36:9] Come To The Fountain -- hymn by Fanny Crosby Come with thy sins to the fountain, Come with thy burden of grief; Bury them deep in its waters, There thou wilt find a relief. Refrain... Come as thou art to the fountain, Jesus is waiting for thee; What though thy sins are like crimson, White as the snow they shall be. Refrain These are the words of the Savior; They who repent and believe, They who are willing to trust Him, Life at His hand shall receive. Refrain Come and be healed at the fountain, List to the peace speaking voice; Over a sinner returning Now let the angels rejoice. Refrain
