Had believers been practicing occult activities? (Acts 19:18)

Acts 19:18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. 19 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.

Acts 19:11 - 20

ESV - 11 And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul. 12 So that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.

As I read the passage cited in the question, any reference to sorcery or other occultic activities pertained to practices in which the individuals engaged prior to their conversion to Christianity, rather than things that they did after becoming Christians. This is indicated to me by the specific account in Acts 19:19 of the individuals publicly bringing the scrolls that they formerly used in their sorcery (and that were apparently of considerable monetary value) to be burned.
