What should we learn from the story of the kidnapping of David's wives?

1 Samuel 30:1 - 31

ESV - 1 Now when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid against the Negeb and against Ziklag. They had overcome Ziklag and burned it with fire 2 And taken captive the women and all who were in it, both small and great. They killed no one, but carried them off and went their way.

To me, the primary point being made in the account is that David did not rely merely on his own strength or judgment, but specifically sought God's guidance (through the Urim and Thummim worn by Abiathar the priest) as to what he should do -- an action that he had not taken on multiple previous occasions, and for which God rewarded him through the success of David's recovery mission.

An excellent and much more thorough discussion of this episode than I can do justice to here can be found at the following web address: https://enduringword.com/bible-commentary/1-samuel-30/
