By my understanding, Zoan (the name of which comes from a Sanskrit word meaning "stronghold") was a city on one of the branches of the Nile. (The Greeks called the city "Tanis", and it was also known as "Goshen", which was the area assigned to the descendants of Joseph and the rest of his extended family (the Israelites) following their migration to Egypt.) It was built seven years after the city of Hebron in Palestine (Numbers 13:22). It was the capital of Egypt under the Hyksos (shepherd kings), who ruled Egypt for more than 500 years. No trace of the original city remains, although many subsequent cities were built on its ruins.
"Zoan was a city in Egypt (Numbers 13:22) -- Numbers 13:22 (ESV) says, '”They went up into the Negeb and came to Hebron. Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt)' -- where God did miracles leading to Israel's release from slavery (compare Psalm 136:13) -- 'He split the [Red] Sea and they walked right through it; he piled the waters to the right and the left.'" --QSB (Quest Study Bible)
