Why did the psalmist yearn so intensely for the Lord? (130:5–6)

Psalm 130:5: "I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
    and in his word I hope;
6 my soul waits for the Lord
    more than watchmen for the morning,
    more than watchmen for the morning."

Psalms 130:1 - 8

NKJV - 1 Out of the depths I have cried to You, O LORD. 2 Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive To the voice of my supplications.

The Psalmist is acknowledging how far Israel had strayed away from God and anxiously awaited their redeemer, The promised Messiah, to bring them out of that darkness and into light.

Just as the sinner today comes to the realization of their darkness, they now also see the need of redemption. They discover hope that by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ and His death for the forgiveness of sin, burial, and resurrection, they can accept God's free gift of salvation. This awakening brings them into the same light immediately upon their belief that the Psalmist desperately sought after.
