Why did this secret disciple risk discovery after Jesus was dead (Luke 23:50-53)?

Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid.

Luke 23:50 - 56

NKJV - 50 Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. 51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God.

Scripture doesn't tell us explicitly, so we can only speculate. Sometimes people just suddenly find courage, especially in this case seeing the wickedness that put Jesus on the cross. Surely he knew that Jesus said to "count the cost" of following him.
