Why did Jesus teach that we should not swear an oath?

Why do not take an oath at all?

Matthew 5:34

Although oaths are still used in some settings (such as a courtroom or the swearing-in of political leaders) even today, Jesus was referring particularly to the use of oaths in trivial or irreligious matters to impress listeners with the speaker's truthfulness or sincerity. However, such usage is a blasphemous exaggeration of the speaker's power. If the speaker is living a life marked by Christian faith, piety, and honesty, a simple "yes" or "no" from that person should be a sufficient assurance of his or her honor and intent to fulfill whatever promise is being made.
