Regarding Ezekiel 39:9, when does this war take place, and are the weapons literally going to burn for 7 years?

Ezekiel 39:9

ESV - 9 Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and make fires of the weapons and burn them, shields and bucklers, bow and arrows, clubs and spears; and they will make fires of them for seven years.

The timing is not specified clearly in scripture. As it stands, we have no reason to interpret the weapons as symbolizing something else, so it must happen. It could be at the beginning of the Tribulation, but other times seem unlikely. After the Millennium will be a new heaven and earth, while mid-Tribulation would be while Jerusalem is ransacked after the Abomination of Desolation, and thus also unlikely. So the only other possibility is at the beginning of the Millennium.

Roger, it's hard to say. Israel is being attacked as described in Ezekiel 38-39. At the time, Israel is living in security (Ezekiel 38:11-12). Since the weapons supplying fuel for Israel take 7 years to burn (Eze. 39:9-10) after the 7 months required to bury the dead (Eze. 39:11-15), the time of the battle is up for grabs. I'd guess the battle occurs before the middle of the Tribulation, as Israel is feeling secure with its treaty with Antichrist. I agree with the Ryrie Study Bible.

Ezekiel 39:9 is part of a pre-trib event concerning the northern alliance invasion of Israel. The full explanation includes veers 10 as well. The burning is a literal 7 years. For a more complete description I recommend the book “The Footsteps of Messiah”, a study of the sequence of prophetic events by Dr. Fruchtenbaum.
