Why didn't Adam and Eve die immediately?

God said to Adam and Eve, "In the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." Why didn't they die that day? 

Genesis 2:17

NKJV - ¹⁷ "but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."
