What is the Bible's stand on the phenomenon of "ghost"?

A family friend died in a hospital after battling with what could be considered poisoning, though there was no autopsy to verify this. Immediately after he gave up the ghost, a friend of his based in another continent who was not aware that he was late, called that the deceased visited him and solicited for some money to be sent to the deceased wife in their home country, knowing fully well that the hospital bills would be settled and other running arounds that would involve money. What's could be the biblical explanation to this story?
