"If you knew the gift of God... you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.

There it is right there; the gift of God is the Holy Spirit.

Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of hands (2 Timothy 1:6) He's speaking of the Holy Spirit.

There are other gifts, however, that God gives. "By grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." (Ephesians 2:8,9)

The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. (Romans 6:23)

Was Jesus telling the woman at the well that he'd give her the Holy Spirit, or did he mean eternal life, when he said he'd give her living water? Or did he mean the gift of salvation as told in Ephesians 2? It's easy to see that the gift is life that never ends. "Living water" is a figure of speech. "The water of life" would have been another way of communicating the same idea.

The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely (Revelation 22:17).

Jesus was talking about the "Water of Life." The water of life equals living water, which equals the gift of God, which is eternal life. That's actually what we are thirsty for; a water that cures thirst.
