Is it wrong for a man to wear a head covering?

Jewish men wear a skull type hat. Is this wrong or not? What is the purpose of the hat? Is it wrong to wear it today?

1 Corinthians 11:7

ESV - 7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.

This verse in scripture is part of a larger context covering chapters 8 - 14 about worship. It is introduced by 1 Corinthians 11:1, 2.

Paul says, in verse 1 of 1Corthians 11, "Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. (Vs. 16) But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God."

1 Corinthians 14:37, "If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord."

Paul, a Pharisee of the Pharisees was an articulate teacher. He was taught by the Lord Himself. (Galatians 1: 15-20) He was neither anti-Torah, nor anti-Jewish. He stood firm against any teaching that violated the "Living Torah" (Jesus Messiah).

The Jews in Babylonian captivity had neglected Torah and adopted pagan ways. The gentile men were ignorant of Torah, they worshipped their idols and wore head coverings.

Paul did not want Jews to copy this practice. He wanted them to be filled with Messiah in their hearts.

Encyclopedia Judiaca declares, "The covering of the head as an expression of the fear of G-d and as a continuation of the Babylonian scholars was endorsed by rabbis."

Exodus 28:4; 37,40 - The priests of God wore a mitre as a symbol of humility and a sign of mourning for the sins of humanity. See also Leviticus chapters 1-5.

Jesus' sacrifice washed/covered believers with His precious blood! There was, and is, no covering required for worship.

Men are to be filled with the Messiah in their hearts. (And women also)

Today some religions still practice head coverings.

Rabbinic Judiasm is offended by men without head coverings.? Did Jesus cover His head? He is often pictured wearing a Tzitzit. This, according to Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:11,2 was not what Jesus passed on to him and the Lord's disciples. Jesus was faithful to Torah!

The Talit (tzitzit) was the Jewish man's outer garment. Sometimes interpreted to be a "prayer closet". Matthew 6:6 and 2 Kings 4:33. Jesus said go to your room and shut the door.

So, a Jewish man wearing a head covering is really a violation of Torah. A gentile man, who is a believer in Jesus should not cover his head either. Although, as established some religions do practice it.

The most important thing about worship, is to worship. Be present in the Lord's house. Hear the word. Participate. Open your heart and mind to God.
