Jewish education, which included study of Torah, is compulsory for children age 6. The Talmud instructs that schools should be instituted in every town. Prior this, both parents teach their children informally. Joseph would have been the more learned one compare to Mary since he went to school. Girl's education only became popular in the 19th century.
