What does it mean that the earth was divided in Genesis 10:25?

"25Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan."

Who divided it? How was it divided, geographically? Politically? by race or by water? is this where the continents appear?

Genesis 10:25

KJV - 25 And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.

I believe the reference to the dividing of the earth in Peleg's time was a reference to several things. The people groups divided, the languages divided and the earth itself was divided into continents.

During the days of the flood, in Genesis 7:11, it says, "the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened." And when the flood came to an end in chapter 8:2, "The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;"

The earth went through cataclysmic eruptions and explosions with volcanoes and water spouts erupting all over the earth. Even after the ark came to rest, it would have taken the earth a long time to settle. Where as the theory of evolutions suggests it took hundreds of thousands of years to effect change on the earth through continental drift, the Bible uphold the concept that "in that day" things changed through catastrophic events.

As you read through Genesis chapters 10 and 11, there is much history of the family lines of Noah's three sons. Through Noah's son Shem came Peleg. Peleg was Shem's great, great, grand-son, and came five generations after Noah. Abraham came five generations after Peleg, through Peleg's line.

The history of Japheth's family line comes to a conclusion in 10:5 as, "By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations."

Chapter 10:32 says, "These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood."

Ham had a son Cush, who had a son Nimrod. He became might as a hunter and as a leader of people. Through him, several cities like Ninevah and Babylon were developed in the land of Shinar, which is modern day Iraq. It was through Nimrod's leadership skills that cities were built in that area, which ultimately led to the building of the Tower of Babel.

In Genesis 11:6 God came down to see what they were doing. "And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do." This is an example of what can be accomplished when people come together with one heart and mind, either for good or for evil. As their intent was evil, God confused their languages.

So these stories which happened during the same time frame, bring together the aspect that the face of the earth was changing significantly as continents divided, people groups were dividing through family lines and languages, politically and in all aspects.

I think that this is a reference to what happened at the tower of Babel when the languages were confused.

If you don’t take the Bible literally, you can never figure out its true meaning. So when it says the “earth” was divided, that is what it means. And also in v. 32, as a result the nations were divided. This fits perfectly with the Babel judgment that enabled and even forced people to separate and be unable to continue with one language. It is perfectly clear until someone insert their own meaning. The earth is not “old” as evolutionists demand it to be. Catastrophic changes in and on the surface because of the flood resulted in the general topography we see today. Next time it won’t be water that changes it all, it will be fire
