What does it mean to "redeem" the firstborn male Hebrews?

Verse 15: "When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons."

Exodus 13:1 - 22

ESV - 1 The Lord said to Moses. 2 "Consecrate to me all the firstborn. Whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and of beast, is mine."

The Lord had spared the first born of Israel when the Egyptian first born children were destroyed when Pharaoh refused to let the children go. Appropriately the firstborn of men and animals were to be "set apart" for His service.

Since God killed the firstborn of the Egyptians, and spared the firstborn of the Israelites, He ask them to sanctify all firstborn as a gift for Him not killing their firstborn.

It also signifies God's Firstborn Son who was sanctified and set apart for God's use and purpose.
