Is it true that the sun stood still?

Joshua 10:12 - 14

ESV - 12 At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon. 13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.

I don’t know how ten degrees is calculated as forty minutes
But here is a story I picked up in investigating about the sun standing still for almost a day as it was a message preach at our assembly six weeks ago and he had no idea of the story going around about the astrnauts finding
Hezekiah, on his death-bed, was visited by the prophet Isaiah who told him that he was not going to die. Hezekiah asked for a sign as proof. Isaiah said, “Do you want the sun to go ahead 10 degrees?” Hezekiah said “It is nothing for the sun to go ahead 10 degrees, but let the shadow return backward 10 degrees.” Isaiah spoke to the Lord and the Lord brought the shadow ten degrees BACKWARD! Ten degrees is exactly 40 minutes! Twenty-three hours and 20 minutes in Joshua, plus 40 minutes in Second Kings make the missing day in the universe! Isn’t it amazing! Our God is rubbing their noses in His Truth!

From 2Ch_32:31 we conclude that it was a supernatural event, the news of which reached as far as Babylon. The Babylonians worshiped the heavenly bodies and they would certainly notice any irregularities. Word spread quickly that it was on Hezekiah's behalf that this great miracle had taken place.
2Ch 32:31 But when the rulers of Babylon sent emissaries to find out about the sign from God that had taken place earlier, God left him on his own to see what he would do; he wanted to test his heart.

2 Chronicles 32:31
Howbeit, in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to inquire the wonder that was done in the land,.... Not to see the two tables of stone which were in the ark, with the other two that were broken because of the sin of the calf, as the Targum; nor to ask about the destruction of the Assyrian army, and the manner of it, as Grotius; but to be informed of the miracle of the sun's going back ten degrees, when Hezekiah was recovered from his sickness; the Chaldeans being a people much given to astrology, and curious in their observations of that kind:

The following story has been circulating recently...
Did you know that the space program is busy proving that what has been called “myth” in the Bible is true? Mr. Harold Hill, President of the Curtis Engine Company in Baltimore Maryland, and a consultant in the space program, relates the following development: I think one of the most amazing things that God has for us today happened recently to our astronauts and space scientists at Green Belt, Maryland. They were checking the position of the sun, moon, and planets out in space where they would be, 100 years and 1000 years from now. We have to know this so we won’t send a satellite up and have it bump into something later on in its orbits. We have to lay out the orbits in terms of the life of the satellite, and where the planets will be, so the whole thing will not bog down. They ran the computer measurement back and forth over the centuries and it came to a halt. The computer stopped and put up a red signal, which meant that there was something wrong either with the information fed into it, or with the results as compared to the standards.

They called in the service department to check it out and they said “what’s wrong?” Well they found there is a day missing in space, in elapsed time. They scratched their heads and tore their hair. There was no answer. Finally, a Christian man on the team said, “You know, one time I was in Sunday school and they talked about the sun standing still.” While they didn’t believe him, they didn’t have an answer either, so they said “Show us.” He got a Bible and went back to the book of Joshua where they found a pretty ridiculous statement for any one with “common sense.” There they found the Lord saying to Joshua, “Fear them not, I have delivered them into thy hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.” Joshua was concerned because he was surrounded by the enemy and if darkness fell they would overpower them.(check references below.) So Joshua asked the Lord to make the sun stand still! That’s right-”The sun stood still and the moon stayed-and hasted not to go down about a whole day!”

They checked the computers going back into the time it was written and found it was close but not close enough. The elapsed time that was missing back in Joshua’s day was 23 hours and 20 minutes-not a whole day. They read the Bible and there it was “about (approximately) a day.” These little words in the Bible are important, but they were still in trouble, because if you cannot account for 40 minutes you’ll still be in trouble, 1,000 years from now. Forty minutes had to be found because it can be mul be found because it can be multiplied many times over in orbits.

As the Christian employee thought about it, he remembered somewhere in the Bible where it said the sun went BACKWARDS. The scientists told him he was out of his mind, but they got out the Book and read these words in 2 Kings: Hezekiah, on his death-bed, was visited by the prophet Isaiah who told him that he was not going to die. Our God is rubbing their noses in His Truth!

...Whether it is 'Sun, stand still over Gibeon" (Joshua 10:12-14) or Hezekiah's Miracle (Isaiah 38). The Miracle of Fatima, or the Dark Day of May 18, 1780 (Dark Day of New England--Wikipedia)... It is all the same... God has absolute infinite control over the Universal Miracle! Creation itself!

When our Lord has the need to demonstrate his dominion over existence itself, he does so lovingly, and ASTOUNDINGLY!

Think of the miracles of healing found in the New Testament! It goes against all convention, and yet Jesus never played the Showboat Game! He never performed miracles to convert those of hardened hearts. Had he jumped off the cross at Calvary, it would not have demonstrated his God-power; it would have revealed a weakness, a lack of confidence and resolve. Impossible for our triune God. (Mark 15:30).

In the Old Testament, God reserved such miracles for necessary reasons! Israel's conflict with the Amorites (Isa. 38). In 1780, a Dark Day to fulfill the second sign of the approaching end--prophecy fulfilled in Matt. 24:29.

While some might debunk the prophecies of Fatima (four prophecies conveyed by Our Lady of Fatima can be said to be fulfilled). God reserves His special miracles for appropriate occasions that fulfill His perfect plan.

Do we need scientific proof of God's miracles? A doubting Thomas mental set is not recommended. We are to believe without reservation. Exercise total steadfast faith by taking our Lord's word to heart. “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations,I will be exalted in the earth." (Psalm 46:10) NIV

The sun and moon are defined as lights in the sky in the Bible (Gen. 1:14-18) not the physical bodies astronomers study with their sophisticated instruments. Neither the physical sun or the moon stopped their normal astronomical movements during this miracle. A gigantic spiritual lens was placed between the earth and sun to redirect the sun's rays over the particular region of the miracle for the time intended. The same occurred with the moon. Although the lens was in the spiritual realm, it was able to redirect both the spiritual and material rays of the sun and moon as wanted.

This type of extremely high technology of divine or angelic origin was also used for Hezekiah's miracle and the modern-day miracles of the sun beginning with that of Fatima on Oct.13, 1917, witnessed by over 70,000 persons.

Today we can understand that it takes special devices or preparation to transform one thing into another, whether it involves either matter or energy. Otherwise, we are still stuck in the primitive idea of magical thinking, which children can delight in but has no value for adults. One thing we can be quite certain of is that God, not the demonic forces, has the highest and most dominant technology of all.
