ESV - 2 And on the third day, behold, a man came from Saul's camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage.

This refugee (an Amalekite see verse 8)came from the camp of the defeated Saul with torn clothes and with earth (dust) upon his head, both signs of mourning or grief (see also Josh. 7:6; 1 Sam. 4:12; 2 Sam15:32) He therefore bore all the signs of lamenting the death of Saul and his son.
